ABOUT THE HONOURABLE IAN COLEMAN SC
The Honourable Ian Coleman SC brings significant legal expertise to Orange Chambers, as a solicitor, barrister, Senior Counsel, former Family Court Judge and Appeal Judge, and most recently as an Acting District Court Judge. Mr Coleman SC’s experience and knowledge is further enhanced by his time as the Judge Advocate for the Australian Defence Force, and as a Commissioner of the Australian Law Reform Commission.
Mr Coleman SC is a specialist in family law at both trial and appellate level. Family Law has been Ian’s predominant area of practice from the early 1980’s, and he has, as an advocate, and as a Judge, contributed significantly to the development of jurisprudence in Australian Family Law.
Mr Coleman SC has appeared in the Federal Circuit Court of Australia, the Family Court of Australia, the Supreme Court of New South Wales, the Court of Appeal in New South Wales and the Full Court of the Family Court. His practice, while almost exclusively in family law, encompasses complex financial disputes involving equity (including estoppel) and the law of trusts, and guardianship law.
Mr Coleman has a particular interest, and expertise, in complex farming and rural property disputes. In this area of law, Ian brings an almost unprecedented knowledge of the law, combined with a wealth of practical knowledge gained from his own farming experience in the Central West. Ian’s love of, and connection with the land is well known. He is a dedicated member of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service and an avid bushwalker.
Mr Coleman SC is a Nationally Accredited Mediator and is available to conduct face-to-face mediations in the Rural, Regional and Remote areas of New South Wales including the Central Tablelands and the Central West.
